What Does Child Sponsorship Provide?

Through child sponsorship, children receive the hope of the gospel, safe education, routine medical care, nutritional support and so much more— all while experiencing a lasting impact that reaches their families and communities.

  • Child sponsorship provides holistic care by meeting a child’s spiritual, emotional, mental and physical needs, through the local church.

  • Through sponsorship, children receive education, medical care, nutrition and discipleship, helping them grow beyond the limitations of poverty.

  • Sponsorship creates lasting transformation, impacting not only the child, but their family and entire community.

  • When you sponsor a child, you offer consistent love, dignity and hope, helping release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.

How Child Sponsorship Meets Children's Needs Around the World

Sponsoring a child with Compassion means you are paired with one child in need, forming a one-to-one connection where you can offer Christ-like love, support and encouragement that helps them thrive.

This is carried out through the local church. Child sponsorship at Compassion works because the local church knows the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the children they serve.

From education to a hug on a hard day, your sponsorship enables a local church to ensure a child is seen, valued and supported every step of the way! Through 74 years of serving the most vulnerable, we’ve seen the lasting impact sponsorship makes to help release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.

How Child Sponsorship Transforms the Lives of Children in Poverty

With their basic needs met, children can become thriving followers of Jesus, equipped to leave poverty behind.

Over 2.4 million children have experienced the life-giving support of child sponsorship around the world. Your sponsorship can change a child’s life by offering consistent care and eternal hope.

Here’s what your sponsorship helps provide.

Spiritual Support: Introducing Children to the Gospel

Children in poverty experience many challenges. But by hearing the gospel, they find eternal hope in Jesus.

When a child is enrolled in a Compassion center, they receive a Bible of their own. As they participate in the program, the gospel is shared through daily prayer, Bible classes and the encouragement they receive from trusted adults at their local church.

Partnering with the local church brings the tangible love of Jesus to your sponsored child. And through child sponsorship, you can share the gospel with a child and let them know someone across the world loves them and is praying for them, changing their life forever.

Education and Learning Support

Sponsorship gives children access to quality education, including tutoring, school supplies and uniforms. This equips them with the tools they need to reach for a brighter future beyond poverty.

In addition, every tutor and staff member at a local child development center is trained in child protection and advocacy, ensuring that every child is protected and cared for. The tutors even support the children in writing letters to their sponsors!

It’s important to note that the education provided doesn’t have to fit the traditional mold; many children are seeking skills-training in certain areas, and your sponsorship can help provide that as well.

Supporting a child’s education offers them the knowledge, skillset and opportunities to grow beyond what their circumstances say they can do. A safe education is a gift that all children deserve to receive.

Medical Care and Health Support

Child sponsorship ensures that a child receives regular medical checkups and treatment to maintain their physical well-being. In addition, sponsorship provides access to mental health and hygiene education resources when needed.

Medical exams are not easily accessible for many children and families living in poverty. Many times, children in need face the harsh reality of acute malnutrition, food and waterborne illnesses and injuries.

Routine medical checkups help protect children against these life-threatening challenges.

Emotional Support and Faith Formation

Guided by local church mentors, children receive emotional support and are nurtured in their faith, helping them grow in confidence, resilience and hope in Christ.

Child sponsorship helps provide a safe space for children to express their emotions and grow in their faith. In times of desperate need, Bible verses, encouraging words and prayerful support can go a long way for a child.

It’s also just as encouraging for them to feel celebrated, whether that’s through kind words or a tangible gift for their birthday. Feeling loved and celebrated can impact a child’s mental health more than we often realize.

You can be a powerful encourager in a child’s life!

Food and Nutritional Support

In partnership with the local church, we ensure that every child has the strength to focus on their education and personal development. Sponsorship provides nutritious meals and supplements to fight food insecurity.

Child sponsorship also provides children with malnutrition monitoring, helping ensure they are on track with their physical development.

We often forget how much a meal can mean. It’s a cause for celebration when a child who once experienced hardship and hunger is provided with meals at a Compassion center.

Lasting Impacts of Child Sponsorship

Holistic child development is central to our sponsorship program. Sponsoring a child offers more than just physical care –– it gives a child the chance to grow in mind, body and spirit, surrounded by a community that believes in them.

And the impact of this development doesn’t stop with the child, but pours into the families and communities we serve.

Family and Community Development

While sponsorship focuses on one child, we trust that God may use that support in ways beyond what we see. The care and support provided to a sponsored child often have wider effects on the child’s family and community.

It’s easy to see the ripple effects that happen when a child is holistically cared for.

Some of these ripple effects include:

  • Through the hope of the Gospel, children can share the love of God with their family members. Planted seeds can easily take root.

  • Mothers of newborns are directly impacted through our Survival program, where they and their child are cared for even before birth! This prenatal care positively affects the mothers, allowing them the training and support to care for their child.

  • Local community members witness the positive effects one child is experiencing through the support of the local church and Compassion, which can lead to many more children being served.

Loved, known and supported children can create flourishing families and communities.

How Compassion Uses Child Sponsorship Funds

With this life-changing work comes deep responsibility. Currently, Compassion serves children through local churches in 29 countries and counting.

We know the hesitation of giving money, where you may not see an immediate impact in front of your eyes. That is why we are committed to financial integrity and transparent about where your sponsorship donation of $43 a month goes.

The monthly donation you give is separated into one of three categories, with majority going straight to the local church of your sponsored child. This approach protects the children’s dignity, creates sustainability, ensures good stewardship and helps the child and their families not become dependent on the money they receive.

You can rest assured that every sponsorship dollar directly goes towards releasing a child from poverty in Jesus’ name. The fruit of your giving will be felt for generations to come.
